Background

  1. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also known as Tic Douloureux ("pain causing tic or twitch"), is a pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve (5th cranial nerve)
  2. Pain is usually unilateral, characterized as sharp or "electric shock-like", begins and ends abruptly
  3. TN is predominantly in patients > 50 yo, female > male, and does not appear to have a genetic association (family clustering rare)
  4. Though TN is not assoc w/ incr mortality risk, it can affect quality of life considerably

Disposition

  1. Usually Outpatient care
  2. Inpt only for surgical procedures
  3. Consult neurologist
