Femoral Shaft Fracture


Femoral shaft fracture occurs most commonly in younger pts secondary to high-energy trauma (MVA). Pathologic fractures can occur due to malignancies.

TREATMENT

  1. Consult ortho; admit
  2. Hemodynamic Stabilization, Analgesia, imobilize.
  3. Splinting the extremity with traction splint unless the pt has a sciatic nerve injury or a grossly contaminated open fracture.

  1. ORIF or rod w/curettage of tumor & packing of site w/cement
  2. Prophylactic fixation of femur fx if:
  3. Bony lesion >50% of canal
  4. >2 cm in size
  5. Pain unresponsive to XRT
  6. Ortho consultation
