Fibula Fracture

Isolated Fibular Fractures:
  Initial Treatment
Splint type & position Stirrup splint
Ankle at 90 degrees
Initial follow-up visit 3 to 5 days
Pt instructions Icing and elevation of leg
Non–weight bearing until follow-up visit
  Follow-up Care
Cast or Splint type & position Short-leg walking cast or cast boot
Prefabricated splint if symptoms are minimal
Length of immobilization 3 to 4 weeks
Healing time 6 to 8 weeks
Follow-up visit interval Every 3 to 4 weeks to document union
Repeat radiography interval At 6 to 8 weeks to document union
Pt instruction Weight bearing as tolerated
Gradual progression of activity as tolerated after cast or brace is removed
Indications for Ortho consult Significant displacement or comminution
Associated neurovascular or ligament injury, compartment syndrome,
tibial shaft fracture
Painful nonunion
