Herniated Disk

- Bulging or herniation of the nucleus pulposus (a gel-like substance that cushions axial compression) through the surrounding annulus fibrosus (the outer, ligamentous portion of the intervertebral disk) into the spinal canal → nerve root irritation and compression.
- Also known as herniated nucleus pulposus.
-Lumbar disk herniations affect 2% of the population, but only 10-25% of these patients have symptoms that persist > 6 weeks.
