Pathophysiology

  1. Mechanisms of injury
  2. Organs injured
  3. Etiologies
  4. Bucket handle injury: may cause tears of mesentery

Diagnostics

  1. History:
  2. Physical exam
  3. Diagnostic testing
  4. Diagnostic imaging

Potential Injuries

  1. Blunt abdominal wall trauma
  2. Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia
  3. Blunt hepatic trauma
  4. Blunt splenic trauma
  5. Blunt intestinal trauma
  6. Blunt pancreatic trauma

Treatment

  1. Assessment / resuscitation occur simultaneously
  2. FAST scan / DPL
  3. Fast surgical evaluation and intervention
  4. Frequently reassess patient
  5. Prophylactic antibiotics
  6. Tetanus prophylaxis

Disposition

  1. Most patients are admitted
  2. Discharge
