Super-Glue Removal (eye)


Diagnosis

  1. Obvious

Pathophysiology

  1. Mechanical damage to lids and cornea from adhesive
  2. Chemical toxicity from accumulation of formaldehyde and cyanoacetate
  3. Result is focal destruction of corneal epithelium

Treatment

  1. Copious irrigation ASAP
  2. Instill anesthetic eye drops
  3. Attempt to carefully pull lids apart
  4. Once lids separated, irrigate another 5-10 min, remove debris from lids/eye
  5. Full eye exam for any eye trauma/corneal abrasion
  6. Treat Corneal abrasion in usual fashion

Disposition

  1. Consult Ophtho in ED for more severe injury
  2. Otherwise outpt ophtho to follow in 24-48 hr
