Diagnosis
 

Background

  1. Integrity of globe outer membranes is disrupted
  2. Both types of injuries approached the same way
  3. A major ophthalmologic emergency
  4. Always requires surgical intervention
  5. Early recognition / management is critical
  6. Morbidity

Pathophysiology

  1. Rupture
  2. Penetration
  3. Corneal perforation may be small & non-visible on exam
  4. Damage to posterior segment of eye is worst

Diagnostics

  1. Must R/O this injury
  2. History
  3. Symptoms
  4. Systematic Eye Exam
  1. Diagnostic testing
  2. Diagnostic Imaging


 

Treatment
 

Goals of ED Treatment

  1. Detect the injury
  2. Protect globe from further injury
  3. Consult Ophthalmology STAT
  4. Provide:

  1. Admission to ophthalmologist
  2. Surgical exploration / repair ASAP
