Background

  1. Rare injury
  2. Larynx is well protected
  3. Women have higher incidence than men

Pathophysiology

  1. Usually crush injuries
  2. Injuries vary based on anatomic location

Diagnostics

  1. History / symptoms
  2. Physical Exam
  3. Diagnostic testing
  4. Diagnostic Imaging:
  5. Special tests

Treatment

  1. Trauma ABCs first
  2. Specific laryngeal trauma issues
  3. ENT consult for possible emergent surgery
  4. Other treatment

Disposition

  1. Have a high index of suspicion
  2. Admit true laryngeal injuries to ICU/stepdown
  3. Minor injuries
