Ultraviolet Keratitis


Background

  1. Most common radiation injury to eye
  2. Damage is cumulative (like sunburn)
  3. Causes

Pathophysiology

  1. UV rays irritate/damage superficial corneal epithelium
  2. Inflammatory response occurs
  3. Serious sequelae (recurrent/prolonged exposure)

Diagnostics

  1. History/symptoms
  2. Symptoms (usually 6-12 hrs post exposure)
  3. Physical exam

Treatment

  1. Topical anesthetic
  2. Short-acting cycloplegic
  3. Topical antibiotic (ointment or drops)
  4. Eye patch - controversial
  5. Pain control

Disposition

  1. Follow-up w/PMD/optho in 24-72 hrs
  2. Return if worse pain
